Axillary crutches are commonly referred to by name, although the term is technically a misnomer, as they should not be placed directly in the axilla.
For correct use, the crutches should be positioned approximately 5 cm below the axilla, with the elbow slightly flexed at about 15 degrees to ensure comfort and proper weight distribution.
The design includes an axillary bar, a hand grip, and double uprights that join distally into a single leg for stability.
Axillary crutches are adjustable in height, allowing both the overall crutch length and the handgrip position to be customized for the user. They are typically adjustable from approximately 48 to 60 inches (122 to 153 cm).
